The diverse cultures that exist and have existed on planet Earth, have something in common is that in most of them, this has always been the use of cosmetic products. It should be noted at the outset that the word cosmetic means all the elements dedicated to cosmetic and body care including soaps, creams, fragrances and the most used, makeup found.

When you think about makeup, I think, almost immediately, a female figure. This relationship can be motivated by vanity that characterizes, for the purpose of makeup is to procure an improved image appearance. However, it has been used since time immemorial by men of different ethnicities.

Origin of the word "cosmetic"

Its origin is Greek and comes from the word kosmetikos, which means, everything about ornamentation. That is, everything that is designed to enhance the aesthetic appearance of something.

The Greeks, like the inhabitants of ancient Egypt used different types of cosmetics which reflected a high social status. Also during the Renaissance, cosmetics had a time of great boom in Italy.

Cosmetics in Ancient Egypt

It is in ancient Egypt where the first archaeological proof makeup, used more or less since 4000 BC is obtained. The first stage for this major cosmetic product were of plant and animal origin. Thus, the red cosmetic was a mixture of a moss orchilla name and lineo. Other plants such as Anchusa tinctoria, plant producing inks were used also for the purpose of decorating the face skin. The makeup was used by the upper classes, even more important than the use of the garments.

In Greece, admiration for beauty was absolute and so the use of makeup and highlight elements that will lead to the appearance significantly, was fundamental. As in ancient Egypt, this trend was seen in the higher social classes.

It was in the seventeenth century in the Renaissance, when monks of Santa Maria Novella, invented in a laboratory quantities of cosmetics and medicines. It was then that Italian women began using different cosmetics on their faces to beautify and so look better in society. The favorite color on the face, then, was the target, which you could look pale.
