A study has analyzed the relationship between the behavior of grouse, one of the most emblematic birds of the Cantabrian Mountains and its surroundings. It is an inevitable relationship between courtship areas of this species and the state of conservation of forests and biodiversity is clear. I

The behavior of grouse can be a fantastic indicated biodiversity and ecosystem health. This is the main conclusion reached by a study which involved researchers from the Higher Council for Scientific Research and was recently published in the journal PLoS One. It has been studied how and why the grouse prefer zones courting other and their connection with the state of the environment.

As Paola Laiolo, researcher at the Joint Research Unit for Biodiversity, "in this study we monitored the contaderos, which are the areas where males are displayed in spring and perform mating, as well as other areas of birds foraging" explains . Analyzing these areas researchers have concluded that these animals prefer "the oldest and most biodiverse plots" Laiolo points.

Thus, mating areas maintained for generations may indicate low levels of human alteration and may use the breeding grounds of this bird as biomarker for better conservation of the ecosystem. In addition, researchers, after analyzing the data, noted that there is a greater biodiversity of birds in forests with larger trees and more types of shrubs and dead wood.
